Co-founder Dr. Cristian Luciano, PhD is an engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur, with more than 25 years of experience integrating engineering and medicine.
He is a pioneer in virtual, mixed, and augmented reality technology, bringing innovations to surgical simulation and training, presurgical planning, and intraoperative surgical guidance.
He is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioengineering, a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences, and an Adjunct Research Assistant Professor in the Departments of Medical Education and Urology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).
He is the Director of the Mixed Reality Laboratory, Assistant Director of the Innovation Medicine (IMED) program, and Research and Development Associate at the Graham Clinical Performance Center in the UIC College of Medicine. He is also the Director of Engineering in the UR*Lab (Dept. of Urology), and an Engineering Faculty Advisor in the ORBITLab (Dept. of Ophthalmology) at the UIC Innovation Center.
His technical expertise includes 3D computer graphics, haptics, motion tracking, scientific visualization, collision detection, parallel programming, distributed computing, dynamics simulation, and robotics.
He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, a Master’s in Computer Science, and a Master’s in Industrial Engineering from UIC. He has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, and holds several patents, which led to successful commercialization.
